Anglican Centre course on the history of Anglican-Catholic dialogue

12 Oct 2026

From 5 to 8 October, the Anglican Centre in Rome hosted a course exploring sixty years of Anglican- Catholic dialogue. The course, entitled Heirs of the Treasures of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, was led by the Revd Dr Jamie Hawkey, Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey, London. The Anglican Centre celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this year, having been founded a few months after the historic meeting between Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Michael Ramsey in March 1966. The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) was established as a fruit of the Common Declaration signed on the occasion of that meeting.

The course explored the six decades of dialogue between Anglicans and Catholics through study of the various texts produced by ARCIC during that period. Participants took part in seminars led by Canon Hawkey in the Anglican Centre each morning. In the afternoons, they visited churches of particular significance for the Anglican-Catholic relationship and in each place listened to an invited Catholic speaker. Revd Fr Martin Browne OSB, Official of the Western Section of the Dicastery spoke to the group at the Basilica of St Paul outside the Walls, the former Secretary of the Dicastery, Bishop Brian Farrell, addressed participants at the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all’Isola, and the Revd Prof. Keith Pecklers SJ spoke to them at the Church of San Gregorio al Celio. The course concluded with a public seminar led by Canon Hawkey on 8 October.
