A Journey of Hope

On the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the conciliar declaration Nostra Aetate, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, and the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue have published, with the approval of the Holy Father, a joint statement titled: “A Journey of Hope. Sixty Years of Interreligious Dialogue and Fraternity in the Light of the Conciliar Declaration Nostra Aetate.”

The Note analyzes how the legacy of the Declaration Nostra Aetate has transformed the relationship between the Church and religions, overcoming historical hostilities through fraternal dialogue, with a particular emphasis on the unique and irrevocable bond with Judaism. Tracing the post-conciliar papal magisterium, the document shows how interreligious dialogue has become a theological imperative, while acknowledging resistances and misunderstandings. It proposes a “pedagogy of dialogue” to educate new generations in the acceptance of otherness, so as to translate authentic spiritual brotherhood into concrete collaboration for peace and justice.
