Pope Leo receives a delegation from the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York
The Holy Father today received in audience a delegation from the New York federation of the Jewish philanthropic organisation United Jewish Appeal.
Recalling the meeting 66 years ago between a UJA delegation and Saint John XXIII, the Pontiff reflected on the journey that led to the drafting of Nostra Aetate, emphasising the importance of mutual respect, dialogue and the firm condemnation of anti-Semitism. He underscored the shared responsibility to serve the most vulnerable, citing the calls to charity contained in the exhortation Dilexit Nos and the words of the prophet Isaiah (58:7–8) as a call to action capable of renewing society.
Furthermore, the Holy Father highlighted how such works reflect the inviolable value of human dignity and the spirit of fraternity that must inspire all social action, expressing deep appreciation for the UJA’s humanitarian commitment to the poor, refugees, older persons and persons with disabilities.
At the conclusion of the audience, His Holiness renewed his gratitude for and support of the mission of the UJA, assuring his prayers for the members of the organisation, for those whom it assists, and for the gift of peace.
