5 Jun 2026

The Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity has learned with sadness of the death of Father Liam Walsh OP. Born in 1933, he was a member of the Irish province of the Order of Preachers for seventy-five years. Following studies in Dublin and Paris, he taught for several years in the Dominican Studium in Dublin, before moving to Rome in 1975 to serve as Assistant to the Master of the Order for the Intellectual Life. He taught Dogmatic Theology at the University of St Thomas Aquinas in Rome from 1984 to 1988, and from 1988 to 2000 at the University of Fribourg, where he also served as Vice-Rector.

Father Liam was a member of the Catholic-Pentecostal International Dialogue from 1978 to 1980, and of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission from 1991 to 2004. He was also a member of the ad hoc Ecclesiology Sub-commission of IARCCUM (International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission), established following the consecration the Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire in 2003. Father Liam served as Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 1989 until 2009.

Requiescat in pace.
