In Memoriam - Very Reverend David Richardson

12 May 2026

The Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity has learned with sadness of the death of the Very Reverend David Richardson, former Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome.

Born in Australia and raised in England, David Richardson was ordained in the Anglican Church of Australia in 1970. Following parish, chaplaincy and seminary work in both Australia and England, he was appointed Dean of St Peter’s Cathedral, Adelaide, in 1989. He served there for ten years, before being appointed Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne. He was commissioned as Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome and representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Holy See in May 2008.

During his term of office, he played a key role in the visits of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Vatican and in the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Great Britain in 2010, the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a Pope. He retired in April 2013. He died on 6 May 2026, shortly after his 80th birthday.

Requiescat in pace.
