27 Apr 2026

From 23 to 26 April, an ecumenical symposium was held in Regensburg (Germany) on the document The Bishop of Rome, published in 2024 by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity.

Entitled ‘Papal Primacy in the Light of Synodal Action. Ecumenical Reflections on the document The Bishop of Rome (2024)”, the symposium was organised by the Institute of Eastern Churches of the Diocese of Regensburg in collaboration with the Johann-Adam-Möhler Institute for Ecumenism of Paderborn and the Chair of Orthodox Theology at the University of Münster.

The symposium brought together 15 Orthodox and Catholic theologians who reflected on the biblical, historical, ecclesiological and canonical aspects of the document The Bishop of Rome.

Fr Hyacinthe Destivelle, Official of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, presented a paper entitled “The Bishop of Rome. A synodal document on primacy. Background and initial reception”.
