DPCU represented at ecumenical commemoration of Nicaea in Paderborn (Germany)

29 Jul 2025

As part of the annual festival week in honour of Saint Liborius, an ecumenical prayer service commemorating the First Council of Nicaea (325) was held on 28 July 2025 in Paderborn Cathedral. Father Dr. Augustinus OSB, staff member of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity (DPCU), together with other representatives of churches and ecclesial communities of the Eastern and Western traditions, took part in the service, which had been prepared by the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenics.

In their addresses, Archbishop Dr Udo Markus Bentz of Paderborn and Bishop Emmanuel Sfiatkos, representing the Orthodox Bishops' Conference in Germany, praised the ecumenical significance of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed.

A Nicaea icon, specially created for the anniversary, was displayed in the chancel and will travel to numerous locations in Germany during the anniversary year.
