Ecumenical Conference on Nicaea at the Angelicum

2 Jun 2025

From 4 to 7 June, an international ecumenical symposium entitled “Nicaea and the Church of the Third Millennium: Towards Catholic-Orthodox Unity”, will take place at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), in Rome, under the patronage of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity.

This international ecumenical academic conference will focus on dialogue between Catholics and Orthodox with a view to the future. Three themes will be explored – the Nicene faith, synodality, and the date of Easter – in the conviction that the Council of Nicaea is foundational for Orthodox-Catholic unity and the proclamation of Christ in our times.

To investigate these topics, over 100 experts from various Christian traditions were invited, either as individuals or as representatives of ecumenical dialogues or academic institutions.

The ecumenical symposium is jointly organised by the IOTA and the ŒCUMENICUM for the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea (325). IOTA – the International Orthodox Theological Association – is a community of scholars and Church leaders promoting Orthodox theology and ecumenical dialogue. The ŒCUMENICUM – the Institute for Ecumenical Studies – is a specialized institute of the Angelicum promoting Christian unity through academic teaching and research.
