On 19 November 2018 Pope Francis received in a private audience the members of the Bilateral Commission of the Delegations of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and of the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, accompanied by Cardinal Kurt Koch.

The Bilateral Commission, co-chaired by Cardinal Peter Turkson and Rabbi Rasson Arusi, held its 16th meeting in Rome from 18-20 November. On the occasion of the celebration of the Universal Children’s Day instituted by the United Nations on 20 November 1954, the Commission issued a joint communiqué entitled "The Dignity of the Human Being. Children in Jewish and Catholic Teaching", highlighting "the tension between guaranteeing maximal freedom of choice and ensuring  protection and disciplined guidance" and the need to "refrain from any instrumentalization of another person, whose dignity should always be seen as a goal in and for itself".
