THE JOINT INTERNATIONAL COMMISSON FOR DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE WORLD METHODIST COUNCIL AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH (MERCIC)

WE BELIEVE IN ONE GOD

Sixty YEARS of Methodists and Catholics Walking Together

The Methodist-Roman Catholic International Commission (MERCIC) was established in 1967. The commission has met annually since then and has produced eleven documents for consideration by the authorities and faithful of the Methodist and Catholic traditions. These reports have explored themes central to Christian faith: Baptism, holiness, justification, Scripture and tradition, the Eucharist, the nature and mission of the Church, and the call to visible communion. In order to present these reports afresh, a synthesis document was published in 2010, bearing witness to the consensus and convergence that had been achieved since 1967, and pointing to further steps neede in order to allow that convergence to be deepened.

MERCIC has produced three more reports in the period since 2010. The year 2025, when Christians mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, is an appropriate time for the publication of an updated synthesis of MERCIC's work to date. During almost six decades of dialogue, Catholics and Methodists have identified in the Creed that emerged from that Council.

MERCIC offers this updated sunthesis, We Believe in One God: SIxty years of Methodists and Catholics walking together, as a gift to all the churches, as they affirm their faith in the Triune God and reflect on the next stages of the quest for Christian Unity.
