Ecumenical participation in International Methodist Youth Seminar
From 9 to 12 August 2024, young adults from around the world participated in the International Methodist Youth Seminar, which took place just before this year’s World Methodist Conference, in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Catholic Church was invited to nominate a young Catholic to participate in the event alongside the Methodist youth, and the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity nominated Ms Sofia Lanza, an Italian currently studying in Scotland.
Participants from five continents engaged in discussions on migration, ecumenism and peacebuilding, recognizing how these interconnected topics are essential for creating a peaceful, hopeful and joyful future. The event featured panel sessions and group discussions, complemented by shared prayer led by Br Paolo from the Community of Taizé in France.
With migration increasing daily, due to global conflicts and the climate crisis, many participants in the seminar either face these challenges first-hand or witness them in their work or service. Discussions during the seminar focused primarily on human dignity and the divine call for everyone to ensure fair treatment for all individuals, fostering a future that aligns with the mission of the Gospel. Reflecting on the experience, Sofia Lanza said: “What truly stood out was the way it sparked meaningful conversations. It was heartening to see a generation that, while feeling respected and welcomed, did not hesitate to address differences and conflicting values or ideas in the pursuit of better understanding one another.”
