In memoriam of His Holiness Patriarch Neofit

It is with great sorrow that the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity has learned the news of the death of His Holiness Neofit, Patriarch of the Bulgarian Church, who passed away on 13 March 2024.

His Holiness Neofit, in all the difficulties he had to face, always entrusted himself with humility to the Lord, offering a living witness of faith, dedication and love for the Church.

On this occasion, Cardinal Kurt Koch, Prefect of this Dicastery, sent a letter of condolences to His Eminence Ioan, Metropolitan of Varna, and Veliki Preslav, current Locum tenens of the Patriarchal Throne, recalling with gratitude his meeting with the Patriarch during his last visit with the Holy Father in May 2019.
