The Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity has learned with sadness of the death of His Eminence Metropolitan (Limouris) of Sassima on 1 June at the age of 70.
Among his many ecumenical commitments at the international level, Metropolitan Gennadios was the Vice‒President of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC) from 1998 until 2006, Co‒President of the Orthodox‒Lutheran International Theological Dialogue, and Co‒Secretary and member of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.
As well, Metropolitan Gennadios was Vice‒President of the WCC Central Committee, member of the Presidium and Central Committee of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), and the CEC Executive and Central Committees from 2002.
In this sad circumstance, Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, sent a letter of condolence to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
