In memoriam Abune Merkorios

It is with sadness that the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity has learned of the death on 4 March of His Holiness Abune Merkorios, Primate Emeritus of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, serving as its fourth Patriarch from 1988 until 1991 in Ethiopia and later abroad.

Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Dicastery, sent a letter to His Holiness Abune Mathias, current Patriarch‒Catholicos of Ethiopia, expressing his condolences to the Holy Synod and all the faithful of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
