His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III new Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church

On 14 October the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church elected Metropolitan Mathews Mar Severios as new Catholicos, with the name of Baselios Marthoma Mathews III.

The enthronement of His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III took place on 15 October 2021 at the shrine of Saint Gregorios of Parumala, Kerala, India.

Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council, expressed in a letter his joy on learning of the election and enthronement of His Holiness.

The new Catholicos was a member of the Joint Commission for Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He had studied at the Pontifical Oriental Institute with ascholarship of the Catholic Committee for Cultural Collaboration of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
