Pope Francis meets with Catholicos Karekin II and Patriarch Sahak II

His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholics of All Armenians, and His Beatitude Sahak II, Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, who were visiting the Vatican from 5‒9 October, were received in a private audience by Pope Francis on Wednesday 6 October.

The Catholicos and Patriarch were accompanied by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, representative of the Armenian Apostolic Church to the Holy See; His Grace Bishop Tatev Hakobyan, Primate of the Armenian Church in Romania; and His Grace Bishop Moushegh Babayan, Grand Sacristan of Holy Etchmiadzin.

Visiting Rome for the international meeting for peace organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio, His Holiness Karekin II and His Beatitude Sahak II also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State; Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity; and Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.

This was the first visit to Rome as Patriarch of His Beatitude Sahak II, who was enthroned Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople on 11 January 2020.

The last meeting between the Catholicos and the Pope took place in the Vatican on 27 September 2020.
