Pope Francis speaks of Christian unity at general audience

20 Jan 2021

On Wednesday 20 January in his catechesis during the general audience held in the Apostolic Palace, Pope Francis reflected on the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity currently in progress.

The Holy Father underlined that Christ did not command his disciples to seek unity, but that he expressed his aspiration in the form of prayer. Unity is thus a gift, a grace to be bestowed through prayer. Pope Francis continued by reflecting that our prayer for unity is therefore a humble yet confident participation in the very prayer of our Lord, “that all may be one, that the world may believe” (Jn 17:21). The world will not believe through persuasive arguments, but only if Christians have given witness to the love that unites them, to the unity that overcomes conflict.
