Forthcoming celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God

21 Jan 2020

The newly established ‘Sunday of the Word of God’ will be marked on 26 January, with Pope Francis celebrating Holy Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica for the occasion. The special day is devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God, so that “the Christian community may concentrate on the great value that the Word of God occupies in its daily existence” (Aperuit illis 2). The ecumenical value of the day is highlighted by the fact that it falls close to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration on 26 January, the Pope will give a Bible to 40 people representing different walks of life. A representative of the Orthodox Churches and of  Evangelical Communities will also receive a Bible from the Pope.
