His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all Armenians, visited the Vatican on 23-24 October 2018 and was received by Pope Francis on Wednesday 24 October in a private audience. Patriarch Karekin II also met Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches, and Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. The delegation accompanying the Patriarch comprised Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Bishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, Revd Father Tovma Khachatryan, Revd Father Anania Tsaturyan, Revd Father Tirayr Hakobyan, Mr Tigran Mansuryan and Mr Suren Grigoryan. The last meeting between the Patriarch and the Pope took place on the occasion of the inauguration of the statue of St Gregory of Narek in the Vatican gardens on 5 April 2018.
