Catholics and Disciples of Christ: Steering Committee Meeting

12 Jan 2022

On 11 January, a Steering Committee meeting was held online in order to prepare for the first session of the sixth phase of the International Commission for Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Disciples of Christ, scheduled to take place in June 2022, in Kentucky, USA. The Disciples of Christ will host this plenary session.

During its sixth phase, with the general topic of "The Ministry of the Holy Spirit" (2 Cor 3), the commission intends to identify the theological foundations regarding the active presence and constant guidance of the Holy Spirit in the ministry of the Church.

The international dialogue was launched in 1977 with the goal of full and visible unity. The latest report, from the fifth phase of its dialogue, "'Do This in Memory of Me': Christians Formed and Transformed by the Eucharist," was published in 2020.

The Steering Committee is composed of the co-chairs of the Commission: Bishop David Ricken, Diocese of Green Bay, WI, USA, and Rev Dr Robert Welsh, Indiana, USA, along with the co-secretaries: Rev Paul Tche, General Secretary of the Disciples Ecumenical Consultative Council and Msgr. Juan Usma Gómez, Bureau Chief of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. The Commission had already held two preparatory online meetings in 2021.
