In memoriam Reverend Geevarghese Chediath

It is with sadness that the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity has learned of the death of Reverend Geevarghese Chediath, priest of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, who passed away on Sunday 21 February 2021, at the age of 75.

Among his many ecclesial responsibilities, Reverend Geevarghese Chediath was the Rector of the St Aloysius Seminary, Trivandrum, and a member for twenty years of the Joint International Commissions for Theological Dialogue with the Malankara (Jacobite) Syrian Orthodox Church and with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was also a member of the Pro-Oriente Syriac Commission and of the Forum Syriacum of the Pro-Oriente Foundation.

Prolific writer author of more than 100 books and of many articles, among which his thesis on “The Christology of Mar Babai the Great”, Reverend Geevarghese Chediath was a tireless worker in the vineyard of the Lord and a devoted promoter of Christian unity.
